About Textiles: Surface Decoration (Summer)
Explore surface decoration in textiles with a particular focus on metals and how to incorporate this in your work. Each term you will start your design work by experimenting with mark making taking inspiration from different objects and by making several samples using different textile techniques you will progress to create a final piece.
What will you learn on this course?
This course offers a practical introduction to textile surface decoration by exploring how to incorporate metal in your work.
You will be encouraged to participate in the planning and suggest techniques to incorporate into your learning experience. To experiment and produce work in keeping with the theme of the term, taking architecture as a primary source of inspiration.
Demonstrations will be provided together with handouts in many techniques including working with metal sheets, foiling, wire, fusible fibres, embossing, hand and machine embroidery.
You will have the opportunity to develop your work to make items (of simple construction) for example a book cover, pictures, jewellery, a wall hanging.
Textile techniques will include:
- Hand embroidery
- Machine stitching and free motion embroidery
- Rust dyeing
- Markel oil sticks
- How to incorporate metal in your work
You will make references to traditional and contemporary artists who have used similar sources of inspiration.
Who is this course for?
This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to all levels, including beginner, improver, and experience students. It is suitable for people who are completely new to textiles, and for those who want to extend and refine their techniques.
This course may be accessible for people with disabilities. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support. Please contact us to discuss your specific accessibility needs.
Do you need to bring anything?
Bring along any pre-loved fabric you would like to use in your pieces. You should wear old clothes and bring an apron to work in.
