Sandra Golding biography

Sandra is currently an African Holistic Dance practitioner, workshop facilitator, community artist, Choreographer and performer. Although classically and contemporary trained at the London School of Classical Dance and West Street Studios, Sandra specialises in African Caribbean dance. She has over 15 years valuable experience in African Caribbean dance as principal dancer/teacher of Birmingham based Kokuma Dance Theatre Company under the artistic direction of Jackie Guy MBE.

All of this has contributed to the focus of her work: promoting the unification of African arts through performance in collaboration with national and international artists, and providing dance and music workshops as well as performing opportunities for individuals who have a passion for dance.

In 2009 Sandra graduated with an MA Dance and Somatic Wellbeing: Connections to the Living Body at the University of Central Lancaster. She has taught nationally and internationally, choreographed for Jamaica 50 celebration in 2012 at Birmingham Symphony Hall, and was guest teacher for L’acadco Dance Company and Ashe Community Arts Company in Jamaica.

During the summer of 2015 Sandra delivered African holistic dance workshops for the Spiritual Living Consciousness Awakening retreat and conference in the Centre for Peace, Geneva. She also performed in Dub Qalander an inter-cultural collaborative performance of Sufi and roots rock reggae music at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Her dedication and passion for the survival of African and Caribbean dance has resulted in the development and delivery of African holistic dance a complimentary therapeutic dance movement education within the community. Her focus is on the health and wellbeing of the individual, their relationship with their bodies and connection with nature.

I joined Dance for Wellbeing because I wanted to be well again. When I am dancing I don’t feel the pain. I feel flexible, I feel light. I Am In Control. We laugh a lot. The Teacher is very good. It doesn’t matter individual capabilities, she is able to get you dancing. I thoroughly enjoy the class.

Sandra’s class is a real find:  it is tailored to participants and is a healthy mix of fun and exercise which is carefully stretching us to improve our posture and movement.  I am enjoying it immensely and can feel myself gradually changing the way that I move and hold myself in everyday activities as well as on the dance floor.  Thank you - long may this class continue.
