Following up on his critically acclaimed, blood-splattered epic Ran, master director Akira Kurosawa looked inward with this collection of eight brightly coloured dreams, here revitalized and bursting off the screen thanks to a sumptuous 4K digital face lift.
Unfolding in a series of eight mythic vignettes, this late work by Kurosawa was inspired by the beloved director’s own nighttime visions, along with stories from Japanese folklore. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master’s imagination, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic apparitions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead and a power plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of creation, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese), Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is a showcase for its maker’s artistry at its most unbridled.
2019 sees MAC host a season of film across the year dedicated to screening cinematic classics in remastered 4K digital prints, offering stunning picture clarity and a chance to see well known features in a completely new light.
