Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for children aged 6 to 11 years. It is open to all ability levels and children don’t need previous experience. Parents are not expected to accompany children on these courses. All our staff are DBS checked.
The course is accessible for children of all abilities who can participate in practical art and craft activities. We can provide a learning support worker and a parent or carer may assist their child if required. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible.
Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.
What will you learn on this course?
On this one day course children will learn how to create drawings, characters and stories using the letters of the alphabet. Taking inspiration from children’s picture books including Oliver Jeffers’ ‘Once Upon an Alphabet’, they will learn to visualise how letters of the alphabet can be interpreted to create characters. The participants will learn how to design and draw characters that engage with each other and place them in situations that convey a message about e.g. teamwork, friendship or loyalty.
This course will give children an understanding of character design and the relationship between text and illustration in children’s storytelling. It’s also a great way to develop confidence in drawing with mediums such as pencil crayons and acrylic paints. Everyone will be encouraged to experiment and be playful in their approach to drawing and colouring.
The day will include a mixture of both individual and co-operative mini tasks but with a focus on a larger piece of individual work containing alphabet inspired characters that children will take home.
Do you need to bring anything?
Children need to bring their own lunch to eat on a supervised one hour break. All course materials and equipment are provided.
Are there any additional costs?
There are no additional costs for this course.
