This one-day course will provide an introduction to landscape painting outdoors, making use of Cannon Hill Park which surrounds MAC.
What will you learn on this course?
A technique first introduced by John Constable in the early 19th century, and then used regularly by the impressionists, plein air painting is an approach that is still very much relevant and adopted by artists working today.
In this one-day workshop, we will make use of Cannon Hill Park in which MAC is situated to find elements of the landscape to focus on during the session.
With the use of viewfinders and a limited set of painting equipment, the course will cover a brief introduction to traditional methods as well as comparisons to contemporary painters such as Mark Rothko or Kurt Jackson. This will include ideas for designing a landscape composition, tips for layout, plus explorations in conveying how the surrounding environment can help to create a mood of a painting. You’ll have time to experiment with a few techniques particularly in watercolour or acrylic, and the opportunity to build towards a completed painting by the end of the session.
There will be opportunity to discuss ideas and intentions with the group and you will receive support in developing your own independent artistic style.
The tutor will develop a guided programme of study with the group, providing demonstrations and one-to-one support as required.
