Design, sketch and produce your own animated creature from an initial 2D concept to 3D character modelling.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for young people aged 11-17 years who are interested in learning anatomical drawing to create life-like creatures. It is open to all ability levels. Beginners may have no experience but should have a strong interest in drawing, cartoons, animation and graphics in games. The course is Ideal for improvers with some experience in Animation or Art as well as for advanced students looking to learn 3D character modelling.
The course is accessible for young people of all abilities who can participate in practical art activities and use a computer. We provide a learning support worker and a carer or support worker may assist if required. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible.
Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.
Parents are not expected to accompany children on these courses. All our staff are DBS checked.
What will you learn on this course?
On this course you will learn how to develop a concept and design for a game or animation character with a focus on life drawing and anatomy. You will explore how to conjure up interesting and unique ideas to design iconic characters e.g. metal and meat, the fusion of biology and technology or mixing up sci-fi superheroes with cartoons. You will also consider how the creature’s lifestyle and environment might affect its design and appearance. Using traditional sketching and drawing techniques you will learn how to present your ideas with the option to evolve your concept with digital painting and 3D modelling.
This course will support you to develop your creative thinking and idea generation skills. You will understand the processes you went through in the development of your character design and be able to show evidence to support this.
This course is taught by tutor Chris Hamilton who is a practicing artist with extensive experience and strong links in the entertainment and creative industry. Using a combination of practical design demonstrations and 1-2-1 support you will receive guidance tailored to your individual projects and needs.
The course runs in mac’s dedicated media studio on Apple Mac computers.
On completing this course you can expect have developed concept artwork for original characters with an understanding of how anatomical drawing can generate convincing body shapes and features.

Who teaches this course?
Our enhanced Safeguarding Policy recommends that we hold emergency contact details for all learning and participation activities (including courses), for children and young people under 18 years old and for supported or vulnerable adults. These are to be completed and signed by parents/carers except young people aged 16-18 and supported/vulnerable adults who are able to sign for themselves.
Completed forms must be handed in to our Sales and Information Team prior to the start of the course.
