Study the ancient art of wax resist batik design. Work with dyes and pigments and specialist equipment such as a ‘tjanting tool’.
Who is this course for?
This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. It is suitable for people who are both completely new to batik, or for those who wish to improve their batik skills.
The course may be accessible for people with disabilities who can participate in practical art and craft activities. Students can be accompanied by a carer or support worker. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation and needs.
This course involves working at low tables and good dexterity is needed in your hands, working with hot wax and standing for short periods of time.
What will you learn on this course?
This course would be for people who have either never tried batik before or have tried it a few times and would like to take up a course to develop their skills and have more time to work on their own batik painting.
In each session, participants will have the chance to use ‘tjantings’ so will be able to improve in their use of this tool.
The course will increase your confidence in
• creating a design for a template
• create a batik free hand
• using a specialist ‘tjanting tool’
• working dyes
Participants will create a hand-painted batik using a template, freehand, and a dip-dyed batik as well as any ‘tester’ pieces they have created in the sessions.
Do you need to bring anything?
Please wear old clothes and bring a waterproof apron.
All other materials and equipment is provided.
Are there any additional costs?
Basic supplies will be available, please discuss materials costs with the tutor if you wish to work on larger projects or require paper frames to present your work.
