Time is the enemy in Sam Mendes’ astonishing World War I epic 1917, presented as a single unbroken shot that plays out in real time.  At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers - Blake’s own brother among them.

The cream of British acting talent - including Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott - appear at vital moments in the film’s narrative, adding to an astonishing spectacle of cinema that pays tribute to the thousands who died in defence of freedom.
