When he was just 8 years old, Kit and his family escaped Saigon as a ‘boat refugee’ during the American-Vietnamese war, settling in London. Returning to Saigon many years later to scatter his mother’s ashes, Kit (Henry Golding) struggles with his identity in a place that is no longer familiar - until he meets Lewis (Parker Sawyer), a Black American who still lives in Vietnam after his father died during the same war that lead Kit to flee. As the story moves to Hanoi, Kit searching for a place to scatter his parent’s ashes, he begins to fall for Lewis and reconnect with his history. Monsoon is a tender introspective portrait of loss and gain that blooms into a satisfying yet understated story of identity.
