Learn how to make a hardbound, hand stitched sketchbook, plus a selection of other small books using traditional bookbinding tools and techniques.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to learners of all levels. Beginners who have no book making experience will be taught the basics. Students with previous experience can develop their skills further and learn new techniques.  

The course is accessible for people with disabilities who can undertake practical craft activities including using sharp knives and accurate measuring. A support worker or a carer may assist. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation and needs.

What will you learn on this course?
On this course you will learn how to make a hardbound, hand stitched sketchbook, plus a selection of other small books using traditional bookbinding tools and techniques. The tutor will demonstrate each stage of the process and students will repeat on their own with assistance as required. The skills covered in this course include:

  • Accurate measurement
  • Cutting and folding of book pages
  • Hand stitching book pages
  • Gluing pages to a hardbound cover

Once you have learned these techniques they can be used to create books of any size and shape using relatively simple materials at home. 

On completion of this course you can expect to have a selection of different sized sketchbooks that you can take home to use or give as gifts.
