Learn to draw and stitch with a sewing machine in this one day course inspired by geometric patterns and free motion embroidery designs.
Who is this course for?
This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers
The course may be accessible for people with disabilities who can participate in practical art and craft activities. Students can be accompanied by a Carer or Support worker. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation and needs.
This course involves use of sewing machines, working at low tables and good dexterity is needed in your hands.
What will you learn on this course?
Using simple techniques including a spirogragh, we will make beautiful patterns and learn how to 'draw' with the sewing machine needle to create our own free motion embroidered piece. Further stitched embellishment can be added using dissolvable plastic- your finished work will be ready to decorate a simple bag or similar item.
Students will learn how to -
• Understand and set up the sewing machine for embroidery
• Learn the basics to enable them to draw, doodle and write using thread to create lines, dots, swirls, circles text and more.
• Experiment using different fabrics, including dissolvable plastic.
• Build layers to create beautiful surface decoration.
• Create interesting machine cords.
• Learn how to decorate and embellish applique work.
Learner will create small pieces of machine embroidery that can be embellished with surface decoration and turned into their individual project to be finished at home, if necessary. For example- a brooch or decoration for book cover, bag or greeting cards.
Do you need to bring anything?
All materials will be supplied but you may wish to bring a notebook. Useful to bring a sketchbook, pen and a few simple ideas for your designs.
If students have a colour scheme in mind or an occasion, then bring along any samples of fabric, threads and fibres.
