Be creative together as a family and learn how to create your own felt bugs and butterflies.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for children aged 6 to 11 years accompanied by their parents or guardians who are looking for an opportunity to enjoy learning together. It is open to all levels. The tutor will teach and demonstrate all the necessary skills and techniques.
The course is accessible for people with disabilities as we can provide a learning support worker, children can work with their parent or carer and the room is wheelchair accessible. The techniques involve arm and shoulder work and require some dexterity in the hands.
What will you learn on this course?
This one-day course is an opportunity for adults and children to enjoy learning about feltmaking together. Working in mac’s dedicated textiles studio you will learn to handle lengths of wool and the specialist techniques required to lay it correctly in order to make a flat piece of sample felt. Learners will be taken through the feltmaking process step by step and create their first sample piece along the theme of bugs and butterflies. You will be taught how to use your felt sample to create a three dimensional summer bug. This could be a beautiful butterfly, a spider or bumble bee.
The skills covered in this workshop include:
- Developing fine motor skills
- Exploring colours and textures through the use of textiles
- Feltmaking techniques
- History of the feltmaking craft.
- Developing work from 2D to 3D
You can choose to work together on a project as a family or work on your own individual projects alongside each other. Everyone will leave with their own unique felt bugs and butterflies.
Do you need to bring anything?
All materials and equipment is provided. You should wear old clothes as some of the textiles processes can get a bit messy.
Are there any additional costs?
The course price includes all materials.
The course price covers one adult and one child. There is a charge for each additional person (child or adult). At least one adult must be present for every three children.

Happy and very pleased with what we’d made. A lovely activity that’s rewarding for all ages and levels. Great to do together.
A bit tired out but really happy with what I had made.
Sad because it was over so quickly and I didn’t want it to end
