Event Information

On this one-day course we use the vibrant and colourful work of Matisse as our inspiration for applique collages and thread drawing.

What you will learn on this course

As Matisse would have cut paper to collage with, we will cut fabric shapes to applique shapes before adding detail and texture by drawing with threads either by machine or hand.

The tutor will demonstrate a selection of two- and three-dimensional stitches alongside commonly used stiches, so you can engage at the level you feel comfortable.

Depending on the reference material you choose, we will look at the possibilities for layering, directional change and the scale of simple stitches to create visual effects, as well as specialist stitches to recreate specific areas of the Matisse work you are inspired by. The result will be a unique textile work of art.

The tutor will use a mix of group demonstrations, individual support and the examples from her own practise to guide you through the process explaining the materials and teaching the techniques. You will receive individual support on your design and how to realise your idea as required.
