Learn how to make pottery animals sculptures, inspired by nature and the beautiful creatures around the world. Learn all about hand building and coiling techniques and imaginative ways to decorate your animal sculptures.

Who is this course for?

This introductory course is for adults aged 18+ years and is designed for all levels, beginners, improvers and advanced practitioners as our tutor will tailor the class to your skill level.

This course is perfect for students interested in natural forms and learning to sculpt them in clay.

The course may be accessible for people with disabilities. You do need dexterity in your hands to work with the clay and the tools. Students may bring their own carer or support worker. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

What will you learn on this course?

During the course students will learn how to make a 3D animal sculptures.

Whether you like larger than life land mammals and want to make an elephant. Or maybe the elegant swoop of a flamingo is what you fancy forming. Perhaps you would prefer the daintier sculpting of a dormouse? Whichever route you take, the natural world is yours for the making.

You will explore different ceramic techniques such as hand slab building, coiling and pinching to form your animals, then learn to paint them with coloured slips to bring your creature to life. There will be emphasis in this course on developing your observational skills and translating these into more personal representations of your choice of animal sculpture. You will be encouraged to experiment and explore different approaches that will help you to find your own artistic methods and style.

You will be working in Mac’s fully equipped sculpture studio with buff, terracotta and crank clays. There may be the option to fire and glaze completed works.

Coming on this course is a great way to experience working with other like-minded people in a relaxed studio environment.

You don’t need to bring anything. All materials and equipment is provided.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs. The course price includes all materials and firing of your work.
