During this fun and relaxed course you will learn the basic controls and techniques common to your digital SLR camera. You will develop the confidence to stop shooting in auto and get the best out of your DSLR camera whilst developing compositional and creative awareness.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and you don’t need any previous experience as full instruction and guidance is given. This course is aimed at people with a digital SLR camera that usually shoot in ‘Auto’ but would like to understand how the camera works and how to take better pictures using manual settings.

The course is accessible for people with disabilities who are able to use a camera and a carer or support worker may assist. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

What will you learn on this course?

This is a fun and friendly course introducing digital camera basics for people with a DSLR camera but little idea how to use it to its full potential. It’s an opportunity for you to unleash your creativity, have fun with your camera and start creating pictures you will want to keep, share and maybe even print!

Taught through a combination of tutor presentations and practical exercises the course covers a range of techniques and skills covering photography theory, technical understanding and artistic approaches including:

Aperture Shutter Speed and ISO

Slow exposures and painting with light

Taking control of focus – auto and manual

Experiments with depth of field

Composition and lighting

Understanding meta data

Using mac’s apple mac computers or your own tablet or laptop you will also learn to download and edit your photos. There will be opportunity for creative discussion about choosing a future body of work to shoot and motivating yourself to get out and about with your camera. Thinking creatively and learning from the masters.

On completion of this course you will have an understanding of the basics of photography and an improved confidence in the operation of your camera. You should feel inspired to be creative with your camera and want to explore your own capabilities further.

Do you need to bring anything?

Bring along your camera, a tripod if you have one and appropriate clothing for going outside.

You can bring your own laptop or tablet if you prefer to use these for post-production instead of the Apple Macs provided but please remember any cables you might need to connect your camera to your device. It is also useful if you bring a copy of your camera manual.
