Learn the techniques of pattern cutting including key terminology, basic techniques and how to draft a simple item of clothing from your own measurements.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. Beginners may be completely new to pattern cutting and sewing or may not have done it for some time and will be taught all the basics. Improvers may have previous experience of pattern cutting and sewing but want to cut a pattern in their own size.

The course is accessible for people with disabilities who can undertake practical sewing activities including operating a sewing machine and using an iron. A support worker or a carer may assist. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation and needs.

What will you learn on this course?

This course will introduce students to the simple techniques of pattern cutting and will teach you to understand the terminology, basic techniques and how to draft a simple skirt from your own measurements. You will then be able to construct the skirt in fabric. The tutor will give step by step demonstrations and you will be encouraged to pattern cut that individual step alone with additional support as required. The course covers the following skills:

How to measure themselves for a garment

How to create a pattern

How to construct a garment from their own pattern

Understand the fittings techniques used in pattern cutting

How to use pattern cutting and sewing equipment safely

Develop precision and accuracy in pattern cutting and sewing

On completion of this course you can expect to have your correct measurements to make garments with, step-by-step handouts a full scale pattern and a finished garment. You should feel more confident about pattern cutting and sewing clothing to a specific size.

Do you need to bring anything?

A selection of essential sewing equipment will be provided.

You must also bring a folder to store your handouts and a 2m length of coloured cotton based fabric to make your garment.

We encourage you to bring your own sewing kit consisting of hand sewing needles, thread, tape measure, stitch ripper, pins, scissors (paper and fabric-large and small), pens, pencils, ruler, tailors chalk,

Additional items for pattern cutting - set square, string/ribbon, paper, masking/clear tape, calculator, tracing wheel (not essential)

If you own a sewing machine and prefer to use it you can have it PAT tested for a cost of £5 and bring it in to use during class. Please pay at Sales and Information prior to your course and testing will take place at the start of the first class.
