Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for children aged 8 to 11 years. It is open to beginners and children don’t need previous experience as full instruction is given on basic skills. This is a great course for those who want to learn how to sew and make personal projects using fabric. Parents are not expected to accompany children on these courses. All our staff are DBS checked.
The course is accessible for children of all abilities who can participate in practical art and craft activities. We provide a learning support worker and a parent or carer may assist their child if required. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible.
Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore age ranges need to be adhered to.
What will you learn on this course?
This one-day course is for children who are interested in working with textiles and learning how to sew. The course covers the following topics:
- How to sew
- How to use equipment safely (including sewing needles, scissors and iron)
- How to create a product that suits your personality
- How to construct a product accurately
The tutor will demonstrate basic sewing activities, gradually building in more advanced activities suitable to individual needs. Each student will be encouraged to select a personal project to work on from a range of options e.g. patchwork, soft toy, bag, fashion accessory. They can chose a project that suits their personality and decorate it to their own taste. These projects will enable them to explore different fabrics, stitches and product construction techniques.
Everyone will leave with a completed sewing project to take home.
Do you need to bring anything?
All equipment and materials will be provided. Children need to bring their own lunch to eat on a supervised one hour break.
Are there any additional costs?
There are no additional costs.
