Autin Dance Theatre is currently developing an exciting Tanzanian Cultural Exchange in partnership with Ibuka Dance Foundation (Arusha) and MUDA Africa (Dar es Salaam), and with the support of Arts Council England, British Council and MAC. ‘

Johnny will deliver the dance masterclass, sharing movement vocabulary derived from both eastern contemporary dance techniques, traditional African dances, and inspired by his recent collaborations with Ibuka Dance Foundation and Muda Africa in Tanzania!

Choreographic commissions that will inspire the Dance Masterclass:

‘Umami’ (Ibuka Dance Foundation) is a modern dance ensemble piece that explores the strength of people in numbers, the community spirit, and the power of individualism. The work features East African rhythms and songs. Devised for a cast of 7 dancers alongside accompanying live musicians, this compelling performance follows the narrative and physical journeys of extraordinary characters through striking physical visuals, acrobatics and elements of set design/props. Autin confronts the performers with his artistic views of their own meaty physicality.

‘La folie des passsion’ (Muda Africa) was devised for a dozen of dancers alongside accompanying live musicians. The work features various movement styles inspired by both Eastern contemporary dance techniques and traditional African dances with a strong emphasis on ‘Singeli’ steps (African urban dance).

Autin Dance Theatre (AutinDT) is an award-winning professional Dance Theatre Company based in Birmingham (UK), established since 2013 and directed by Johnny Autin and Producer Kirsten Tranter. The Company is a collaborative and project-based organisation that produces engaging artistic performances and provides an extensive learning and participation programme.
