Sat 21 Jul, 10am - 4pm | £34 (£31) | Improver/Advanced level | Ages 18+

Learn the ancient Japanese technique of nuno felting before designing and making your own scarf using felt and silk.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults 18+ years. It is open to improvers. You should have some previous feltmaking experience and understand the basic processes.

This course involves working at low tables, includes long periods of standing and good dexterity is needed in your hands and shoulders. The course may not be suitable for people with disabilities but you may contact us to discuss your specific situation and needs. A carer or support worker may assist but must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support.

What will you learn on this course?
On this course you will learn the Japanese technique of nuno felting. This is where soft merino wool is laid onto a piece of silk and the rubbing and rolling process takes place in order to attach the wool to the silk. You will begin by making several small samples to learn the process and test different nuno techniques. You will then choose a particular technique to make a wearable scarf.
On this course you will learn:

  • How to divide wool evenly
  • How to calculate shrinkage of wool and silk
  • How layering of different quantities of wool will affect the texture of the silk
  • How to make tassles
  • The importance of paying attention to the scarf edges

How to consider colour choices in the design process

The course is delivered through a mix of group demonstrations, practical exercises and solo projects. Individual support and guidance is given as required and students are encouraged to look at and discuss each other’s work.
You will leave this course with a unique, wearable nuno felt scarf.
