This course explores how music can inspire and influence your creativity. Each week the tutor will introduce you to painting and drawing techniques and set tasks inspired or informed by different styles of music, from bebop jazz of Duke Ellington to classical compositions of Satie, contemporary music styles including drum and bass and meditative sounds such as Tibetan singing bowls.
You will be guided through a musical journey exploring artistic approaches and techniques.
What will you learn on this course?
This course will explore how music can inspire creativity, painting and drawing. You will learn to understand how visual and musical or sound forms might translate, influence and inspire each other. A variety of musical forms will be explored.
The course will cover
- Drawing and painting techniques
- Creating art with mixed media including inks, paint, pastels, watercolour and charcoal
- Collage using found images, magazines and other papers
- Painting without brushes
- Figurative work
- Composition and form
- Successful use of colour and tone
- Introduction to art techniques inspired by 20th century artists including Peter Blake’s album covers, Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee and others.
- Creating art work inspired by song lyrics and bringing narrative into your work.
- The course may also include the opportunity to create art work with live music or live dance performance.
The class includes group tuition and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you to achieve your aims for your work. There may also be some collaborative working with other members of the class.
Each class will include time to view, reflect and constructively critique your own work and that of other students on the course, done in a friendly and relaxed environment. On completion of this course you can expect to have produced several drawings, paintings and mixed media art work
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to students of all levels. Whether you are a complete beginner with no experience of drawing and painting to someone with professional art qualifications this course will challenge you to use music as inspiration for your visual images
The course may be accessible for people with disabilities who can participate in practical art activities. The art activities do require cognitive interpretation. A support worker or a carer may assist. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Do you need to bring anything?
Basic materials such as paper, pencils and paint are provided during the lesson, and some basic art equipment may be borrowed on the day, such as pencils, erasers, sharpeners, brushes and paint. You are encouraged to bring additional art materials and resources to work with.
Are there any additional costs?
Any additional art materials must be provided at your own expense.
