Event Information

Join Artist Saranjit Birdi in this one-day exploration of painting inspired by music and culture.

What will you learn on this course?

This one-day course will explore how music can inspire abstract visual forms in painting and drawing. You will learn how to understand how visual and musical might translate, influence, and inspire each other. The tutor will introduce you to painting techniques using colour and set tasks inspired by different styles of music, including classical, blues, and pop. Reference will be made to artists in history who have explored associations between colour and music.

The course will cover:

  • Creating artwork inspired by song lyrics and bringing narrative into your work
  • Painting techniques
  • Creating art with mixed media including acrylic paint, pastels, and charcoal
  • Painting without brushes
  • Successful use of colour and tone

This class includes group tuition and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you achieve your aims for your work.

The day will include a visit to the exhibition ‘Maryam Wahid: Zaibunnisa’ to inspire and inform the session.

There will be time to view, reflect, and constructively critique your own work and that of other students in the course, done in a friendly and relaxed environment. On completion of the course you can expect to have produced several drawings and paintings.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+. It is open to students of all levels; whether you are a complete beginner with no experience of drawing and painting, or someone with professional art training, this course will challenge you to use music as inspiration for your visual images.
