Join Artist Saranjit Birdi in this one-day exploration of painting, inspired by music and colour.
What will you learn on this course?
The tutor will introduce you to painting techniques using colour, and set tasks inspired by different styles of music including classical, blues and popular music.
The day will include a visit to the exhibition of paintings by acclaimed artist Caroline Walker, to inspire and inform the day.
The course will cover.
- Painting techniques
- Creating art with mixed media including inks, paint, pastels, watercolour and charcoal
- Collage using found images, magazines and other papers
- Painting without brushes
- Composition and form
- Successful use of colour and tone
- Creating artwork inspired by song lyrics and bringing narrative into your work.
- ‘References will be made to artists in history who have explored associations between colour and music’
The class includes group tuition and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you to achieve your aims for your work.
You will include time to view, reflect and constructively critique your own work and that of other students on the course, done in a friendly and relaxed environment. On completion you can expect to have produced some paintings and work in mixed media.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to students of all levels. Whether you are a complete beginner with no experience of drawing and painting to someone with professional art qualifications this course will challenge you to use music as inspiration for your visual images.
The course may be accessible for people with disabilities who can participate in practical art activities. The art activities do require cognitive interpretation. A support worker or a carer may assist. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Do you need to bring anything?
MAC will provide equipment and materials for participants, although attendees are encouraged to bring their own where possible to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission. You are encouraged to bring additional art materials and resources to work with.

Any additional art materials must be provided at your own expense.
