A welcoming space for children with disabilities or additional learning needs and their families to enjoy being creative together.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for children aged 8 to 11 years and their parents or guardians who would like to spend time being creative together. The course provides a welcoming space for children with disabilities or additional learning needs who would like to explore a range of visual art techniques in an environment that caters to their specific requirements. It is open to all ability levels and children don’t need any previous experience.
The tutor has experience teaching children with Special Educational Needs and is supported by a learning support worker. The room is wheelchair accessible. Photos of the room and staff and a half term course plan can be made available for those who will benefit from pre-tutoring. Please inform us of your needs when you book your ticket.
Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.
What will you learn on this course?
On this weekly course participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of different artistic materials and learn new techniques to express their creativity while making art in a fun, safe environment. They will work on a variety of 2D and 3D projects, such as creating a paper mache bird house, wax resist, tissue paper transfer and other exciting techniques. Each activity will have a suggested outcome but the sessions will be child-led so they can be open-ended and undirected should your child feel more comfortable working this way. There will be a mixture of smaller projects that parent and child can work on together or alongside each other and, if the group would like, larger collaborative group projects. Working both in groups and on individual projects encourages the students to build confidence and develop sharing and social skills. The course is taught with a combination of group demonstrations and individual guidance and support.
This course is intended to provide a supportive space for like-minded families to learn the benefits of creativity to calm and focus the mind and make some new friends in the process.
You are welcome to take home with you any individual pieces of work you make.
