Design and animate your own retro games inspired character on this creative journey from paper to pixels.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for young people aged 11-17 years. It is open to beginners and improvers so you don’t need previous animation experience as full instruction is given. If you do have some experience you can explore and learn new techniques to further develop your skills.

The course is accessible for young people of all abilities who can participate in practical art activities and use a computer. We can provide a learning support worker and a carer or support worker may assist if required. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible.

Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.

Parents are not expected to accompany children on these courses. All our staff are DBS checked.

What will you learn on this course?

On this course you will explore the steps involved in developing your own character inspired by retro games. You will be encouraged to think creatively about their personality and appearance, then you will learn how turn your unique character in to a drawing on paper, and how to bring it to life using digital animation techniques.

The course covers skills such as:

  • Exploring your imagination and creativity
  • Developing conceptual artwork
  • Drawing in various art styles from vintage to contemporary
  • Digital animation techniques

The course runs in MAC's dedicated media studio on Apple Mac computers.

As well as learning to use specialist technology this course is a great way to learn about team working and develop your communication, delegation and organisation skills. The tutor will work closely with the group supporting individual and team based projects.

On completing this course you can expect have a better understanding and greater appreciation of the subject and the confidence to go forward and produce your own pieces of work. You will also have a sketchbook and artwork that supports your final digital character creation.

You don’t need to bring anything as all materials and equipment is provided.
