Learn the basics of hand sewing and making, make an animal bag, bunting or a cushion to take home. Learn to trace a pattern and cut out a basic shape in fabric.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for children aged 8 to 11 years. It is open to beginners and children don’t need previous experience as full instruction is given on basic skills. This is a great course for those who want to learn how to sew and make personal projects using fabric. Parents are not expected to accompany children on these courses. All our staff are DBS checked.

The course is accessible for children of all abilities who can participate in practical art and craft activities. We provide a learning support worker and a parent or carer may assist their child if required. Carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss any access needs.

Age ranges are set carefully to take into account key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore age ranges need to be adhered to.

What will you learn on this course?

Children will learn how to sew on this one-day course, they will choose from a bag, bunting or a cushion that they can make and take home at the end of the day.  

The tutor will present the 3 makes and help them select which projects they would like to work on. The tutor will then demonstrate pattern cutting and sewing techniques. Students will first practice sewing on a piece of fabric before they make their final item.

By the end of the session, all children will have an item that is personal and made by themselves to take home. The course aims to build children’s confidence in making a finished product, and is tailored to their age group.

There will be some use of scissors and sewing needles under supervision.

All students will follow the same instructions until the final part of making where depending on chosen item to make it unique.

Do you need to bring anything?

All equipment and materials will be provided.

Children need to bring their own lunch to eat on a supervised one hour break.
