What will you learn on this course?

South American pottery sits in museums and galleries around the world, and rightfully so! The fascinating constructions of South American potters include stirrup pots from the Moche, the highly stylised patterns of the Nazca, and the post-fired painted ceramic wares of the Paracas.

During this short course we will look at contemporary work by ceramicists in pre-Colonial South America and in particular the designs of the Paracas, Nazca and the Moche civilizations. Using these works as examples and decorative techniques such as carving, slip painting and sgraffito to explore and develop your own designs inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.

You will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and the tutor will teach you how to translate these ideas into your own unique designs. Using the ceramics skills you have learned you will choose the appropriate techniques to realise your design in clay. The course tutor will encourage you to develop your individual interests and styles and support you through to the completion of your project. Any work you produce on this course is yours to take home.

Our fully equipped pottery studio will give you access to various stoneware clays, pottery wheel, glazes, coloured slips, all necessary tools and the firing kilns.
