This course involves working at low tables and good dexterity is needed in your hands.
What will you learn on this course?
This course offers a practical introduction to textile surface decoration through an exploration of a particular theme.
Each term will take inspiration from different countries to create textiles using a wide range of techniques and styles concentrating on a variety of different processes each term. Participants will be able to take their work in other directions if they choose and may wish to bring some resources to help them. Techniques taught on the course will enable students to then carry on developing their textile samples into finished pieces such as cushion covers, book covers, simple bags, wall hanging or brooches.
Travel to Barcelona in Spain to explore the work of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi.
We will learn about the roots of the organic designs he adopted. We too will take inspiration from nature to explore and develop a variety of traditional and contemporary techniques including applique, patchwork, quilting and block printing with paint or batik wax using fruit and vegetables. Gaudi's cheerful mosaics and tiles will encourage us to develop some of our experiments into finished pieces for example a pin cushion from crazy patchwork or a unique fabric bag embellished and quilted with your designs of palm leaves, lizards or sun flowers.
Travel to China for a term of experimental and contemporary textiles using mixed media based on ancient Chinese crafts.
We will look at the interesting patterns and marks made from ancient scripts, explore paper making and create decorative surfaces. Enjoy experimenting with marbling, layering of papers, making silk paper, using bondaweb, heat manipulation, wire, pelmet vilene, and more.
These techniques and source of inspiration will be our starting point to enable us to develop ideas to produce a collection of simple books and book covers, or similar items.
