Newman University Drama Department (Yr 3) present The Visit of the Old Lady by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

The villagers of Güllen are desperate. All their businesses failed years ago, and no-one has any money. When they hear that the richest woman in the world, Claire Zachanassian, who grew up in Güllen, is coming to visit, they begin to hope that perhaps she might just be persuaded to give the town just a little, perhaps, of her money. When she offers them a billion they cannot believe their luck… until they find that they must agree to pay a terrible price in return for their good fortune.

Dürrenmatt's play explores questions of justice and morality, and just how much money can buy. These questions are even more pressing today perhaps, in the age of Donald Trump, than when the play was first written.
