This online course combines a reading group with a writing course where published texts are read and used as models to develop your own creative writing skills. It will take place via Zoom.
This is a fortnightly course and there will be 6 sessions in total.
What will you learn on this course?
The Writers Reading Group is a creative hybrid of a writing and reading group in which short stories, novels and occasionally plays are selected as great models for developing your own writing. From studying accomplished prose writers you will learn writing skills, such as characterisation, plot development, techniques of descriptive writing and dialogue, how to write a good short story, and plot outlines. Through discussing good fiction you will also move beyond simply loving or hating the book to being able to use it as model from which to learn how to develop your own writing.
We will discuss two or three books a term. For each book we will spend one session discussing it and then two sessions sharing participants’ writing responses to it. The tutor will lead the sessions, and will facilitate the group in giving feedback to each other.
