Providing opportunities for Elders across Aston and Newtown to participate in the arts was the core aim of the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) and Black Arts Forum Elders Project that was delivered throughout 2017 and comes to a close in March 2018.

The project, funded by Birmingham City Council and Arts Council England (ACE) through its Aston and Newtown Commissioning Fund, was delivered by local artists engaging elders in music, movement and well-being, storytelling and visual arts.

The project was delivered in centres and communities that are often under served by the arts.  It encouraged elders to participate in a range of weekly art sessions as well as events at MAC.  They were able to express and share in activity combating loneliness and isolation whilst providing new, enjoyable and fulfilling experiences in the arts through their engagement.

The project was also promoted through the Ladywood and Perry Barr Art Forums.  Over 130 elders engaged in over 100 sessions across the four art forms, in weekly sessions in day centres and luncheon clubs across north Birmingham.

This resulting exhibition showcases work made by the elders and documents their creative journey over the past year.
