In the spring term of 2021, MAC Makes Music helped Music Education Hubs across the West Midlands to develop their musical opportunities and make them more inclusive. Young people aged 5 to 18 in Solihull, Sandwell and Coventry were invited to share their thoughts about music. In total we received 2875 responses from young people who attend Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Special Schools across the region.
The survey content was developed by a young musician, IRIDIS, from the West Midlands as part of a commission from the MAC Makes Music programme. The questions were then reviewed by Head Teachers, a local authority Head of SEND, representatives from the Virtual School, and Music Education Hub Senior Leadership Teams. Focus groups and other creative methods of consulting young people are also in progress, as recommended by IRIDIS.
The aim of the survey was to find out;
- What the young people currently do
- Their musical preferences
- What they might like to do in the future
- Barriers to greater involvement in music
The data collected highlighted that music is an important aspect of many young people's lives but that more can be done to offer musical opportunities related to the specific interests they shared. We will continue to analyse this data and work closely with these Music Education Hubs to offer recommendations and improve communications around how to access musical opportunities across the West Midlands.
