Award winning filmmaker and mac tutor, screens feature length documentary ‘Bicycle’ at mac this September

Tue 9 September 2014

BICYCLE, the brainchild of Birmingham based BAFTA winning director and mac tutor, Michael B Clifford and producer Pip Piper, both keen cyclists, asks the question why is cycling and the bicycle back in fashion? It tells the story of cycling in the land that invented the modern bicycle, its birth, decline and rebirth from Victorian origins to today.

The film weaves bicycle design, sport and transport through the retelling of some iconic stories and features interviews with notable contributors including Sir Dave Brailsford, Gary Fisher, Chris Boardman, Ned Boulting, Dannielle Khan, Sir Chris Hoy, Tracy Moseley and Mike Burrows. BICYCLE is a humorous, lyrical and warm reflection on the bicycle and cycling and its place in the British national psyche.

Michael said: 'It’s fantastic to be able to bring the film to mac after successful initial screenings around the UK. Much of the film was shot in the region, so there will be familiar sights (and people) for audiences at mac to look out for. We've used material from the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) to tell the Bicycle's story and I'd like to think there are a few treats in store there too.’

Pip Piper added:  “It has been great to see the overwhelmingly positive response to the film. The bicycle is a wonderful thing and incites a lot of passion in many people. Right now cycling is having a real renaissance so it is very timely to see our film out. As Birmingham based filmmakers the fact that the modern bicycle and its subsequent world revolution began just down the road in Coventry and saw Birmingham at that core was really inspiring, especially when a new cycle revolution is happening here in Birmingham now“
