mac Birmingham spaces named after generous funder – People’s Postcode Lottery

Wed 24 May 2017

Local players of People Postcode Lottery (PPL) will be pleased to learn that their generosity to mac Birmingham will be honoured with two spaces renamed to acknowledge their support. mac’s Community Gallery, which hosts work from locally based artists, charities and organisations and mac’s outdoor arena, which will showcase an array of family shows for £3.50, both subsidised by the funder. Both spaces were officially opened by representatives of Peoples Postcode Lottery (PPL) on Monday 22 May.

mac’s Cinema Gallery will now be called the: Community Gallery: supported by Players of People’s Postcode Lottery and the outdoor arena will now be called: The Summer Arena: supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. In addition to opening the spaces, representatives from the funder, who travelled from Edinburgh, also enjoyed a tour with mac CEO and Artistic Director, Deborah Kermode and took part in a pottery class with mac’s experienced Artist Tutor and local resident Sue Dyer.

While mac has endured cuts in its funding from Birmingham City Council, PPL has continued to offer financial support, this year this amounted to £275,000, enabling local visitors to enjoy free, year round activities. This includes Disabled Access Day, which took place in March, and offered disabled people and their families the opportunity to enjoy free creative activities across the centre and regular monthly activities for children, which take place on the first Saturday of each month. This includes animation, arts and craft workshops. This summer, courtesy of the players, visitors can also enjoy £3.50 family shows, subsidised by the funder. This includes music, theatre and circus shows in mac’s outdoor arena.

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: 'Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have awarded £825,000 to this fantastic arts complex in total over the last three years, to allow them to deliver vital work. I am delighted that mac Birmingham have been able to thank players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their incredible support by naming two spaces in their honour.'

Deborah Kermode, CEO and Artistic Director at mac Birmingham added: ‘The players of People’s Postcode Lottery continue to be fantastic supporters of our work, helping to ensure our activities are enjoyed by many more local people. As a huge thank-you we believe the re-naming of our Community Gallery and outdoor Arena is a fitting accolade and will help to ensure our partnership with the players is recognised among our visitors. We’re glad that we’ve been able to give them a taster of our activities today and look forward to welcoming them again in the future.’
