The generous players of People’s Postcode Lottery (PPL) have subsidised a summer of £3.50 pocket money shows, all of which take place in mac Birmingham’s magnificent outdoor theatre. In addition the players have also funded the decoration of the space, with beautiful umbrella’s, adding colour to its authentic brick design. Audiences young and old can enjoy circus from India, meet unusual puppet creatures, sing and play instruments as well as enjoy comedy and tales of intrigue, while exploring the world of archaelogy. With seven performances to enjoy, performances begin on Thursday 20 July until Thursday 24 Aug.
Puppets, slapstick comedy and live music in the jungle – Curious Creatures (27 July)invites the audience on an exploration like no other, while revealing the mysteries of the animal kingdom. Hailing direct from Rajasthan, India, Circus Raj’s (6 Aug) cast of dancers, illusionists, aerialists, acrobats and rope walkers present a colourful, vibrant, fast moving extravaganza of intrigue, music, laughter and surprise. Caty Wompus (17 Aug), performed by a cast of professional dancers and community artists with and without a learning disability, use contemporary dance, parkour and circus skills, set to an original Bluegrass score, to tell a story of hope following a ferocious storm. The final show - Ariel on the Cliff (24 Aug) is a participatory performance, which was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Stan's Cafe Theatre Company and is a celebration of all things breezy. Offering original acoustic music, sensory storytelling, puppetry and movement - can the audience help the animals return safely before the storm arrives?
Deborah Kermode, mac CEO and Artistic Director said: ‘We’re grateful that the players of Peoples Postcode Lottery, which include many from the West Midlands, continue to support our programme of activity. We’re especially pleased that their funding will help to introduce local families – some for the first time – to the uplifting experience of live theatre. The pocket money performances are a fabulous introduction to a fun, creative programme and we look forward to welcoming families to our venue this summer.
