As part of National Volunteers Week 1-7 June (organised by NCVO) we are celebrating and thanking our Birmingham Arts Volunteers.

To say thank you, we'll be sharing stories from MAC's wonderful volunteers, alongside other organisations across the city, who have dedicated their time to help us to deliver our busy programme of visual arts, performance, cinema, and special events.

We asked some of our dedicated volunteers about why they decided to get involved with volunteering within the arts sector, and to share their positive experiences with us.

Matthew, a volunteer for events at MAC including the Cinema Poster Sale and Cine Q Festival, said: "Organising MAC’s 2020 Cinema Poster Auction was a huge pleasure. In build-up, we worked as a friendly, small team to sort through the MAC's past year of film posters. As a cinephile, I took great delight in handling the artwork, remembering recent favourites and noting down the films I wanted to catch.

"Given the strength of the MAC’s cinema programming, the posters were a wonderful mix of independent and international titles, as well as live theatre broadcasts and animated movies – sure to delight both collectors and families. Besides working behind the scenes in the MAC’s superb cinema (and taking home a few posters myself), I adored working closely with the other volunteers and Yvonne, Sally and Nic at the MAC to build an event that we were all proud of."

Carole, a volunteer for MAC's BSL Exhibition Tours, as well as Celebrating Age events including MAC's Culture Club and Tea with a Twist events, said: "My name is Carole and I am a Deaf volunteer at MAC with The A Team (access volunteers). I help with BSL tours and talks of the art exhibitions and also at the Tea with a Twist events for people over 65."

MAC is extremely grateful for all of our volunteers, who help to make sure our events, activities, workshops and exhibition tours run smoothly for our audiences. This week, and every other week, we thank you for your time, dedication and assistance.
