Students Come Together to Save Our Theatres

Fri 7 August 2020

An initiative by students across the UK has been set up to help theatres across the UK that have been detrimentally affected by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Founded by Warwick University Drama Society, the campaign 'Students Saving Our Theatres' has brought together university societies across the country aims to raise money for selected theatres and organisations across the country through crowdfunding.

"Midlands Arts Centre is absolutely delighted to be a beneficiary of the campaign, chosen by The Birmingham University Footnotes Comedy Society. This fundraising initiative run by the students really demonstrates such generosity, determination and leadership for the arts sector.

"It has been such a challenging time for all of us and we can’t thank our supporters enough for your donations when we have urgently needed you the most." - Sally Pennington, Head of Development, MAC

Originally, the campaign ran for five weeks and featured weekly challenges for students from drama societies from all around the UK, in order to raise money (a £10,000 target) for their local regional theatre.

The fun challenges included activities such as creating a Tik Tok video, running 5k a day, and an online scratch night to showcase student theatre.

"The Guild Drama societies at the University of Birmingham have come together in association with Students Saving Our Theatres. The initiative sets out to help raise funds and save the arts industry and the local theatres we love. We are really worried about the state of our theatres during the Covid-19 crisis and we want to do something to help!

"Being a part of this movement is imperative. This pandemic has severely affected the livelihoods of artists and theatres across the world, and we want to do our part to help support the industry during this challenging time. MAC has always been a place that has welcomed students and where art and theatre is at the forefront of their initiative.

"We believe that the arts is a sector that should be looked after. It is an industry that not only entertains but informs, challenges and instructs; something that MAC certainly embodies. We are thrilled to be able to help MAC and give them the support they deserve." - University of Birmingham Guild Drama Societies

The original deadline for the campaign has now been extended. You can show your support or make a donation via the Students Saving Our Theatres crowdfunder campaign here.
