Jessica Hartshorn returns to MAC for a third year to create our Christmas mural inspired by One Snowy Night by Slot Machine Theatre, based on the popular children’s books by Nick Butterworth.
For this year’s mural, One Snowy Night characters are displayed across all three of MAC’s Arena Gallery walls. The vibrant colours and festive scenes tell the heart-warming story, leading audiences into the theatre for our festive show. Jessica’s take on the One Snowy Night imagery has been an imaginative escape for both children and adults.
The adorable animals featured on the wall by the theatre doors contrast against the emerald green geometric shapes, welcoming you into MAC’s theatre and giving the animal stars of the show their own spotlight. On the opposite wall, Jessica has intricately painted the lead One Snowy Night character, Percy the Park Keeper, on his long, spiralled winter walk. Her detailed painting skills help to embed the show’s narrative, bringing plain white walls to life and even more smiles to children’s faces. Each wall is painted with plenty festive, family fun.
We spoke to Jessica for her thoughts on this year’s mural, as well as working with MAC. She quotes:
"This is my third mural and MAC and definitely the most challenging, as there was more detail in each area. As the artwork was inspired by the book ‘One Snowy Night’, I look led at the wall space and adapted sections from the book to fit the long wall spaces.
My favourite part is the end wall with the animals queuing at Percys door. I love the colours and textures and I worked hard to create the light reflecting from the light in the hut. This area took the longest, around 1 and a half days."
"I work with acrylic paint so sometimes I have to paint layers and wait for the paint to dry, so I then move onto a different part of the mural.
I love working at the MAC everyone is so friendly and it is such an inspirational place to be, especially at Christmas."
