Artist Rooms: Jenny Holzer

YOU MUST DISAGREE WITH AUTHORITY FIGURES - Politics & Protest Artist Lab

This summer mac Birmingham invites young people to get political at a series of workshops and artist labs inspired by the ARTIST ROOMS: Jenny Holzer exhibition.

This exciting project is happening across the highly political summer of ‘17 led by arts organisation Ampersand Projects, who will capture the opinions, fears and hopes of young people in their own voices. The project will focus on Holzer’s use of text and language, slogans and statements and the themes of protest and action.

The project will provide opportunities to people in challenging circumstances to explore and express their own political views from their unique situations, such as homelessness or displacement due to migration. Ampersand Projects is working with homelessness charity Crisis and St. Chads Sanctuary who support refugees and those seeking asylum to engage their communities.

The activity will culminate at the end of the summer with an artistic disruption to mac’s public spaces with political, and potentially confrontational messages, colour and moving images created by Ampersand Projects, inspired by the words of Birmingham’s young people.
