Scott Johnston

A filmmaker and visual artist with over 15 years experience in the UK film industry, I work across a number of media creating short films, music videos, multi media installations and music. I have been commissioned and programmed internationally, including by Ikon Gallery, BBC Television, Flatpack Festival, Sonar, Edinburgh Film Festival, Domino Records, Capsule and Experimenta Festival.

My work is steeped in references to early cinema and Surrealism, using dream imagery and unconscious visual connections, often intricately related to music/sound design. I have devised a number of site-specific installations including 'The Divine Edgar' (Ikon Gallery, 2007/Fierce Festival, 2008) and live film projections for a number of musicians including Brian Duffy (Modified Toy Orchestra).

I’ve collaborated extensively with the band Pram (Domino Records), making a number of short films and music videos as well as touring extensively across Europe.

In 2005 we co-devised the acclaimed sound/light spectacle ‘The Photophonic Experiment’ together with BlissBody and Project Dark, and the multi-media performance ‘Shadow Shows’ (Edinburgh Int’l Film Festival, 2010). I have a long association with arts organisation Flatpack Festival, who have commissioned numerous projects from me, and Capsule – the latest being The Haunted Screen (2013), a participatory film project that took place in Birmingham Library.

In recent years, I’ve been producing visual content for theatre, as well as co-founding a music collective, Larva, who create film soundtracks. I’m currently working on a number of things, including a live score to a classic science fiction film!

mac is a great environment for exploring film making with both young people and adults. The support staff are always engaged, enthusiastic and very helpful, and the facilities of the Media Studio allow me to take quite large groups through the processes of shooting and editing digital media, and the location within Cannon Hill park is always fantastically useful and inspirational to our projects! The experience of tutoring at mac has specifically assisted me in my development as a facilitator for young people’s creativity.
