What will you learn on this course?
Contribute to sustainable living by learning to repair your clothing making items last longer and add personal touches to update your wardrobe.
During the course participants will learn:
- How to repair hemming
- To replace buttons
- Fix rips and tears in material, including the lining of a pocket
- Carry out invisible patching
- Create visible patching to customise clothing
- Carry out no sew repairs
The tutor will give a small introduction about the class content and will give a step by step demonstration of each repair technique. After each step is demonstrated, the attendees are encouraged to sew the technique alone. However, those who require additional support will be assisted by the tutor as and when questions or problem arise. Support will then be given as and when the attendee needs it.
A full health and safety briefing and hand-outs will be given at the beginning of the workshop.
At the end of the course, you will have developed a number of samples to use as reference for your future repairs or fixed a number of your own items. Please note, no final clothing make is included in this class.
Who is this course for?
This one-day course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. No previous sewing skills are required.
At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. Dexterity in hands essential. The course requires sitting at a low table. The room is wheelchair accessible. A personal assistant or companion must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.
Do you need to bring anything?
A selection of essential sewing equipment and sample fabric for sampling will be provided.
We encourage you to bring your own sewing kit consisting of hand sewing needles, thread, tape measure, stitch ripper, pins, scissors (large and small), pens, pencils, ruler, tailors chalk.
Please also bring a notebook and stationary to make notes of the sampled techniques you create.
You may wish to bring items that need repairing to the class to work on.
