About Creating Art In Context (VA43 Spring)
A practical art class that encourages deeper research into an artist or an artistic subject, theme or movement that will inspire your creative thinking and develop your painting, drawing, and mixed media skills.
What will you learn on this course?
Enhance your practical art skills and deepen your understanding of art history in this project-based course. This course will explore an artist, style, or movement – using it as inspiration to build your drawing and painting techniques. Through hands-on projects, lively discussion, and guided research, you’ll develop both your creative practice and your historical knowledge. While themes will vary from term to term, there will be an emphasis on discussion and research into the history and context of the project theme.
You will be encouraged to share any artistic or historical research you have undertaken in an informal setting, helping to inform and broaden the scope of your artwork. A full group review takes place at the end of each term, offering a valuable opportunity to learn from your peers.
The course begins with group discussions and demonstrations related to the project theme. After this, teaching is primarily one-to-one, tailored to each student’s level of experience and personal artistic goals. You are encouraged to interpret the projects in your own way, developing your ideas through relevant and thoughtful research.
Depending on the focus of the project, students typically complete several paintings, supported by sketchbooks or folders containing drawings, preparatory work, photographs, and research. By the end of the course, you can expect to have built confidence and skills in painting and drawing, while enjoying a friendly, engaging environment with like-minded people.
