Creative Translation for Young People (CSC158)

Join us for a new creative writing workshop to find out how comics travel the world through translation!

What will you learn on this course?

Learn about Middle Eastern comics in this session that combines writing and art activities. Lebanese artist Lena Merhej’s Yoghurt and Jam: Or How My Mother Became Lebanese is an award-winning Arabic graphic novel that explores what it’s like to grow up half Lebanese, half German. Decode snippets from the book and watch the comic come to life in English! You will also have the chance to write some Arabic.

No knowledge of Arabic is required.

This workshop will be led by the book’s co-translator, Anam Zafar. Anam is a multi-award-winning translator from Arabic and French to English. Her work has won several awards including a PEN Translates award and a longlisting for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for children aged 12 to 17 years. It is open to all ability levels and levels of experience. We provide a learning support worker and all our staff are DBS checked. Parents are not expected to accompany children on the course.

The course is accessible for children of all abilities. A parent or carer may assist their child if required but must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support. The room is wheelchair accessible.

Age ranges are set carefully to consider key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.
