What will you learn on this course?
Ghalamzani is the art of engraving designs into metal using carving chisels and is a traditional craft from Iran.
This workshop will introduce participants to Ghalamzani metal engraving to create a sample piece within the session. Participants will be taught how to hold and handle the required tools correctly, learning step by step how to work into the copper along their chosen patterns.
The workshop will include:
- An introduction to the history and artistry of metal engraving.
- Transferring and fixing simple patterns onto the surface.
- Learning how to hold and control the chisel safely and effectively.
- Guided practice with basic lines and shapes.
- Developing confidence with tools through more detailed practice.
- Engraving along simple pre-prepared patterns.
- Understanding rhythm, patience, and technique while working with copper.
Metal engraving is both enjoyable and rewarding, with this workshop offering a hands-on experience of an ancient craft.
Mohammadhadi Ghahramanpouri is a contemporary visual artist whose practice focuses on the traditional craft of metal engraving, a medium both intricate and deeply rooted in history.
Working primarily with copper and silver, he uses hand tools and time-honoured techniques to produce detailed narrative reliefs, transforming metal sheets into powerful visual stories.
Born in Iran and now based in the UK, Ghahramanpouri has experience in metalwork, blending technical mastery with cultural storytelling. His work is influenced by Persian miniature art, mythological themes, and spiritual symbolism — each piece a dialogue between past and present.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults aged 18+. It is open to all levels of experience including beginners.
At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. A high level of manual dexterity and tool handling is required. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.
Do you need to bring anything?
All materials, tools and equipment are provided including a small piece of copper to make your sample piece.
Please wear closed shoes in the Jewellery Studio. Flip flops or open toed sandals are not permitted. We recommend an apron or old clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
