Introduction to Basket Weaving (TE107 Autumn)

Now is the time to learn about the age-old heritage craftsmanship of basket weaving! Join us on this 12-week course to learn the fundamentals of basketry and weaving with willow. Throughout the course, you will be introduced to two main basketry methods: frame baskets and stake and strand baskets.

What will you learn on this course?

Throughout the workshop, you will be guided through the fundamentals of basket weaving with different types of willow. You will be taught traditional methods to make beautiful accessories for the modern home. The tutor will lead several demos and set tasks which will introduce tips and techniques for you to create your own basket.

The course will cover:

• How to choose and prepare materials for weaving
• How to use the appropriate tools for basketry
• Different types of weave, wale and border techniques
• How to create a frame basket or a round basket

In addition, there will be opportunity to discuss ideas and intentions with the group and you will receive support in developing your own independent artistic style.

This course is for those who are looking for an enjoyable and unusual new hobby which produces attractive and functional results from natural materials.

The tutor will develop a guided programme of study with the group providing demonstrations and one-to-one support as required. The use of a personal sketchbook is encouraged to enable the development of ideas and of the student’s own working style.

On completion of this course, you will have the fundamental skills needed to create baskets from natural materials.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to all levels, including beginner, improver, and experience students. It is suitable for people who are completely new to textiles, and for those who want to extend and refine their techniques.
