Introduction to Mosaics for Young People (YP08 Autumn)

Learn about mosaic art and create a range of unique pieces to display at home. An instantly satisfying art form, this course offers an informal space for young people to relax and create together.

What will you learn on this course?

Mosaics are an ancient technique for creating artwork using small, colourful pieces of glass, ceramic or stone.

You will learn how to draw a design, transfer it onto your chosen base and how to attach the mosaic tiles. Discover how to mosaic on curved, flat and 3D objects with lots of designs available for inspiration. You will begin by creating simple pieces with the opportunity to develop more complex ideas and designs as the course progresses.

Learn to safely use a range of hand tools including nippers, cutters and scorers to cut tiles to desired shapes such as circles, curved leaves or straight lines.

Find out about different bases and make up of decorative items in different settings, for use inside and outside.

The tutor will provide access to a wide variety of materials such as colourful tiles and beads, working with pre-cut tiles and shapes before moving on to cutting your own. You’ll learn how to finish and grout your pieces to a high standard for display indoors or outdoors.

At the end of the course you will have the skills to design, mosaic and grout a plaque, wall hanging, terracotta pot and 3D object.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for young people aged 12 to 17 years. It is open to students of all levels and no prior experience is required as full instruction is given. We provide a learning support worker and all our staff are DBS checked. Parents are not expected to accompany children on the course.

The course is accessible for young people of all abilities. The room is wheelchair accessible. A parent or carer may attend to assist the child if required; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs.

Age ranges are set carefully to consider key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.

Do you need to bring anything?

All materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring any patterns or designs for inspiration. There is the option to bring in items from home including favourite broken cup, broken jewellery or shells to use to use in your art work. Old clothes or an apron are recommended when working with grout.
