Introduction to Quilting and Patchwork (TE08)

Discover this traditional craft perfect for creating blankets, decorative textiles and functional homewares.

What will you learn on this course?

Learn to repurpose scrape materials or sentimental fabrics into beautiful new items.

You will cover the basics of choosing fabrics, colour value, cutting, sewing and assembling to create small and easily constructed items from your samples. These could include pin cushion, book cover, tote bag, cushion, tablet case, small wall hanging or a simple pouch bag to keep your precious sewing in. Choose to work up to larger quilts or blankets as you progress.

You will learn the difference between traditional English quilting using pierced, applique, paper piercing and crazy patchwork techniques. Progress to some of the more advanced patterns such as Log Cabin, Seminole, Scrappy quilts and making your own bias binding.

These processes include hand stitching and machine stitching, if you haven't used one since school days, fear not! You will have the opportunity to learn how to confidently thread up and use a basic sewing machine, or for those with more experience, you can progress to a walking foot, a free motion foot and stitching in the ditch.

References to traditional English patchwork and quilting will be made including the famous 1718 Coverlet, Suffolk Puffs and Cathedral Windows. However, you will also be introduced to the inspirational and creative work of many contemporary textile artists who incorporate these techniques in their work.

Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to create your own unique coloured and patterned fabrics to incorporate into your work by using simple dyeing techniques. Using both natural and commercial dyes you will learn a variety of processes including ice dyeing, rust dyeing, dip, space and tie dyeing.

Full guidance, demos and handouts will be provided throughout the course.

Who is this course for?

This new and exciting course is designed for beginners but also suitable for anyone with some experience of quilting and patchwork. Full instruction and guidance are given. Those with previous textile experience will be able to develop their skills and learn new techniques.

Do you need to bring anything?

You are welcome to bring in scrap fabrics to use in your work, though we also have plenty to start you off. Please wear old clothes to work in.

Materials required for this course are included in the course fee, optional additional materials can be brought with you.
