Introduction to Weaving, Fibres and Constructed Textiles (TE108 Summer)

Learn how to make constructed textiles through carding and spinning, peg and pin loom weaving, felting and macramé.

What will you learn on this course?

This course will introduce you to the wonderful world of constructed textiles – from learning how to make your own yarn, to different processes and skills to make your own fabulous, constructed textile pieces.

You will be taught the basic skills in fibre processing, gaining a knowledge of different types of fibre and their properties, and the history and global context of various constructed textiles.

Learn how to transform raw fibre into yarn through carding, roving, and spinning using drop spindles. Experiment with different textile processes, including macramé, and even try out weaving on specialist looms. Apply your new skills to produce decorative pieces for a wall hanging, mat, or cushion cover.

This course is delivered through a mix of demonstrations and practical exercises. You will finish the course with a portfolio of fibre samples and some developed decorative pieces.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. You don’t need any previous as full instruction and guidance is given. Those with some experience will be able to improve their skills, technique and develop new designs.

Do you need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment are provided. You may wish to purchase your own items to use at home between sessions, such as a drop spindle, crochet hook, and knitting needles. Supplier information will be given in the sessions.
