Play Piano (MU97 Autumn)

Learn piano in a style of your choosing to give a performance, pass an exam, or simply play for pleasure.

What will you learn on this course?

On this course you will learn to play the piano in a style of your choosing from classical, folk and pop. Each lesson will include different elements such as finger exercises, musical scales, sight reading, learning and playing repertoire, and playing duets with the tutor. The content of lessons will vary depending on your goals.

The tutor offers preparation for ABRSM examinations and students have excellent pass rates with good results. In addition to technical skills, aural training and music theory are also provided.

All lessons are one-to-one and teaching style is influenced by Russian traditional piano teaching and also includes elements of the English style approach to teaching. The tutor uses the complete ‘Alfred Basic Piano Library’ piano course which covers all levels, and the ‘Bastietn’ course books. The course books form a basis for teaching that is enhanced by the tutor’s own extensive experience.

Students can expect to learn to play piano pieces to performance standard and develop their musicianship and technical skills alongside an enjoyment in making music.

In order to progress, students must be prepared to practice between lessons and need access to an instrument to do so.

Note: These are individual 30 minute sessions with the tutor. You will receive 25 minutes teaching and the remaining time for arrival and pack up. The tutor teaches back-to-back sessions, students should arrive 5 minutes before their lesson starts and late comers will lose lesson time. If the tutor is running more than 5 minutes later, make up time will be offered on another occasion.

Who is this course for?

This course is open to both children aged 5+ and adult learners and students of all levels. It is suitable for complete beginners with no previous piano playing experience, and for improvers who may have had lessons elsewhere or haven’t played for a while.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. You do need dexterity in your hands to play the piano. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

You need to bring your own music books as advised by the tutor.

Are there any additional costs?

You must purchase music books as recommended by the tutor. These can easily be ordered online or from music shops.

Students must have access to a piano or keyboard for individual practice.
