About Seaweed Surface Decoration and Stitch (ASC97)

Spend two days experimenting with surface decoration techniques inspired by the design and texture of seaweed!

What will you learn on this course?

Join us for a unique course bringing together the skills and experience of two artists who work in sustainable textiles.

On day one, discover how sustainable materials are transforming the design world with artist and workshop facilitator, Eleanor MacMillian as she guides you in creating your own bio yarn samples made from seaweed!

You’ll also be inspired by a visit to Genevieve Robertson's exhibition, showing at MAC from Sat 25 April to Sun 5 July, an artist who uses natural materials to create her work.

Your handmade algae yarn samples will be left at MAC to dry ready for use on day two.

The workshop then moves on with experienced Artist Tutor Helen Lan introducing several printing techniques including mono, gelli, screen and potato, to build up a lovely collection of pebbles and seaweed backgrounds.

On day two you will use your bio yarn and other techniques to applying surface decoration and embellishment to your work using free machine embroidery and cords. Learn to use materials which react to water or heat such as dissolvable plastic and Tyvek.

Experience working with sheers on an embellisher machine, applique, machine and hand stitch and more. You will learn from demonstrations by our artist tutors and handouts. There will be plenty of opportunity to experiment and develop your work.

You will look at textile artists who create similar work on this subject and take away a handout with tips on how to press your seaweed on your next visit to the coast.

At the end of the course, you will either have a finished piece to mount or hang, or several pieces and ideas to complete at home.
