Descend into the crypt and discover the secrets of Gothic Cinema, as you watch and discuss macabre movie extracts with a film expert!
What will you learn on this course?
The Gothic casts a long shadow over film, influencing everything from early cinema to present day blockbusters. In this special Halloween themed 1-day course, you will explore the rich history of this atmospheric genre, its eye-popping visual style and some of its most legendary pioneers, and learn why like many of the subjects it depicts, the genre keeps returning from the grave!
Through tutor-led presentations, group discussions and the screening of relevant Gothic film excerpts, you will learn:
- The history, themes and legacy of “the Gothic”
- The genre’s literary origins and endless adaptability to film
- Influence on horror cinema, from Hollywood classics, to camp, and contemporary moviemaking
- key aspects, style and significance of selected films
- the wider social and historical context selected films were made in
Indicative texts include Frankenstein (1931) Nosferatu (1922 and 2024) and the Vincent Price starring The Masque of the Red Death (1964) as well as more unusual fare like Jan Svankmajer's The Castle of Otranto (1977) Contemporary films from the same tradition will also be highlighted, along with work by Alfred Hitchcock, Masaki Kobayashi and Guillermo Del Toro. You may discover new and unfamiliar movies, or be reintroduced to old favourites.
On completing this short course, you will come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Gothic horror genre, its style and themes, and be able to discuss, compare, and to critically analyse and contextualize films in general.
Finish your day with an optional specially selected Gothic Horror Film, The Company Of Wolves (1984) screening in MAC’s cinema shortly after the class. Please note your course ticket includes entry into to this screening only and applies to green tier seating.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to learners of all levels, and aimed at those with a passion for film and going to the cinema.
Although this is not an academic course, it is influenced by the tutor’s experience, which includes publishing scholarly work about film and teaching Film Studies at university level.
